THE RETURN OF THE KINGS: PART ONE

This is a two-part study on priesthood and kingship. Part One will discuss the nature of every born-again believer's priesthood. Part Two will continue on to explore the equally important calling of believers to kingship.

=============================================

To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,

and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father,

to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever, Amen

Revelation 1:5, 6

PART ONE ~

PRIESTHOOD

What images come to mind when we hear the word "priest"? Confessional booths or white collars? Men robed in elaborately embroidered gowns inside great cathedrals? Chanting monks hidden away in obscure monasteries? The customary smile and handshake at the church door? Or the overworked pastor at the local church perhaps?

Well, whatever the word "priest" implies to the world, God has quite a different definition of priesthood. When HE speaks of His holy priesthood, He's talking about that elderly intercessor at church who says little, but who's every whispered prayer echoes throughout Heaven. He's talking about that mechanic at the local garage with soiled, grease-stained hands raised in adoration to his King. He's talking about that little child dropping her coins in the offering box because she wants Jesus to have it more than she wants that chocolate bar. He's talking about that housewife turning her kitchen sink into an altar, worshiping with tears streaming while she does the dishes. He's talking about that teenage boy with the dreadlocks and broken heart, sharing the gospel with the addicts and alcoholics on the street. He's talking about you, and He's talking about me.

The idea that priesthood can be attained through study, celibacy, religious affiliation, title, career, appointment or dress code, is not found in scripture. In fact the Bible states the only Kingdom requirement for priesthood is to be washed from sin in the Blood of Jesus Christ (Rev. 1:5, 6) Every further credential the world associates with priesthood has been added by the religion of the flesh. The scriptures also indicate that it is God, and not man, who calls and appoints His priesthood: "And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was, so also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He (God) who said to Him: "You are My Son, today I have begotten You." (Heb. 5:4)

According to the scriptures, a priest's pre-eminent calling is that of ministering, through worship, to the Lord Himself:

Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to Me as priest… Exodus 28:1

Intercession is also associated with priesthood:

And Moses said to Aaron, "Go to the altar, offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself and for the people. Offer the offering of the people, and make atonement for them, as the Lord commanded." Leviticus 9:7

The apostle Peter taught that the entire church is called to be a living, holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices of worship and proclaiming the Lord's praises.

You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 2:5

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light…." 1 Peter 2:9

Contrary to popular opinion, priesthood therefore is not the exclusive domain of a select few by virtue of theological training or denominational appointment. It is both the privilege and responsibility of all born again believers regardless of age, gender, race or educational background. If you, reading this study, have entered the Kingdom of God through faith in the shed Blood of Christ then you are a priest of the Kingdom called to minister to the King and proclaim His praise throughout the heavens and the earth!

Which Priesthood?

Today in the church, we hear people describing themselves in terms of "the Zadok priesthood", or as "Levitical worshipers". Are these valid and truthful labels for us to be applying under the New Covenant? To clarify, let's take a brief look at the different types of priesthood referred to in scripture.

A Priesthood of the Firstborn - Since the Lord God ceased walking with Adam in the cool of the day, His great desire has been to re-establish close, intimate communion with mankind. Furthermore, God, who is attended by angelic hosts, has ordained that mankind should have the honour and privilege of ministering to Him personally. Indeed, this is the first and primary function of priesthood (Ex. 28:1; 1 Peter 2:5). When God called Israel out of Egypt, His stated intention was to establish for Himself a royal priesthood (Ex. 19:5 &6). The book of Numbers tells us that on the day that the Lord "struck all the firstborn in Egypt", He also sanctified to Himself all the firstborn in Israel (Numbers 3:13). This priesthood of the firstborn was set apart by the Lord for His own. However when the children of Israel rebelled and worshiped a man-made idol, the Lord passed the privilege of priesthood to the tribe of Levi, who were the only tribe to stand with Him when He judged Israel for their idolatry ( Ex. 32:26-28; Numbers 3:10-12; 3:40-51).

The Levites - The Levites retained the responsibility for priesthood throughout the Old Covenant. Aaron and his descendants served in the office of High Priest and anointed priests, ministering directly to the Lord at the altar. All other males from the tribe of Levi between the ages of 25 and 50 served as assistant priests, maintaining the tabernacle and providing for the needs of the High Priest and his family (Numbers 3:6-10; 8:24-25). The responsibilities of this priestly tribe were diverse and included serving as doorkeepers, preparing the sacred incense, looking after the ministering vessels, and composing and playing worship songs for use in the temple (1 Chron. 9).

Zadok - Zadok was a Levitical priest who served during the reigns of David and Solomon. His name derives from a root Hebrew word (tsadaq) meaning "righteous". Zadok is named as one of the mighty men who joined David at Ziklag during his alienation from Saul (1 Chron. 12:1, 28). Throughout David's reign, Zadok remained loyal to him, even when David was forced to flee Jerusalem after the rebellion of his son Absalom. When David was nearing death, Adonijah, another of David's sons, rose up to proclaim himself king. God, however, had chosen Solomon as David's successor. Again, Zadok the priest remained loyal to David, anointing Solomon king at David's request, before Adonijah could establish his own reign. The prophet Ezekiel proclaimed that the "sons of Zadok" had been chosen by God to "teach the people the difference between the holy and the unholy" (Ezek. 44:15,23). The Zadok priesthood has therefore come to signify faithfulness, wisdom and a seeking after the anointing.

A New Priesthood

"Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High". Gen. 14:18

There is no doubt that the church has valuable lessons to learn from both the Levitical and Zadok priesthoods. Each were severely tested yet remained faithful at crucial periods in Israel's history. However, both these priesthoods were incomplete shadows, or types, of that which was to be established by Jesus under the New Covenant. For not only is the New Covenant a better covenant, but the Blood of Christ has rendered the Old Covenant obsolete (Heb. 8:6,7; 13). Under this New Covenant, Jesus became the High Priest of an entirely new order of priesthood - the unchangeable priesthood of Melchizadek (Heb. 5:6; 7:24). Notice that the name Melchizadek, or Malkiy-Tsedeq, is a combination of two Hebrew words. The first "malkiy" means "king", while the second is from the same root word from which the name Zadok is derived, meaning "righteousness".

Melchizadek, King of Salem (peace), is mentioned briefly in Genesis 14:18 as the mysterious king who ministered to Abram after the battle of the kings. Melchizadek presented wine and bread to Abram, just as Jesus has presented His own Blood and His own Body. Furthermore, this Melchizadek is said to be "without genealogy" (Heb. 7:3). This means his priesthood was not inherited through the flesh. Levitical priesthood was inherited by family lineage, passed down from father to son, generation after generation. The Melchizadek priesthood, however, is a priesthood of the Spirit. You might even say the Levitical priesthood was based on who your father was, while the Melchizadek priesthood is based on who Jesus' Father is! Jesus would never have been eligible for priesthood under the old Levitical system, simply because he was not of the tribe of Levi, but of the tribe of Judah (Heb. 7:11-14).

The Levites were primarily servant-mediators between God and His people. The Zadok priesthood were Levites who demonstrated a deeper holiness and faithfulness to the Lord, even when their fellow Levites betrayed their sacred office (Ezek. 44:10). Both the Levitical and the Zadok priesthoods were about serving, but not about reigning. Melchizadek, however, was both a priest AND a king.

Jesus is both our Great High Priest and King of Kings, after the order of Melchizadek (Heb. 4:14; 7:17). His priesthood is unchangeable and eternal, and it is this priesthood that we, the New Covenant church, have entered into. Under the new covenant, there are no longer any priestly clans between the people and God. Jesus is the Great High Priest, the only mediator between man and God, through whose shed Blood we all now have access to the Father's Presence (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 10:18-22).

Most assuredly I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. John 5:24

To be eligible for the Melchizadek priesthood you must have passed from death to life. Jesus is the Firstfruits, the Firstborn from the dead, the Great High Priest who has indeed passed from death to life (1 Cor. 15:23; Col. 1:18). The church is bone of His bone, and flesh of His flesh (Eph. 5:30).

There is therefore no scriptural foundation under the New Covenant for any believer to be claiming membership of a "tribe" (denomination), or the "covering" of an earthly "father". The scriptures are clear that there is one church and one holy nation of priests - the church of the Firstborn (Heb. 12:23), of which Jesus is the Head and we believers are the Body. He is the Great High Priest and we are the royal priesthood. Jesus Christ has restored the priesthood of the Firstborn!

The Restoration of David's Tabernacle and Davidic Worship

Many today are speaking of a present-day restoration of the tabernacle of David, which was prophesied by the prophet Amos (Amos 9:11) and spoken of by the apostle James (Acts 15:16). The term "tabernacle of David" is said to refer to the tent King David erected to house the Ark of the Covenant which he had brought up to Jerusalem (1 Chron. 15:1). At that time David appointed teams of Levitical priests to minister prophetically and musically before God day and night (1 Chron. 9:33; 25) . It needs to be noted that there are a number of different interpretations concerning James' reference to the tabernacle of David in Acts 15. It is not the focus of this particular study to explore those differences. It is, however, the purpose of this study to challenge some of the current teachings associated with the restoration of David's tabernacle.

The resurgence of diverse expressions of anointed, creative worship being generated by the renewed interest in these scripture passages should be welcomed. At the same time, however, we should also be questioning the current trend in some sections of the church which advocates a return to "Davidic" worship through the leadership of a "levitical" class of priestly worship leaders. It is being suggested that these "levitical" worshipers carry a specific anointing to lead God's people into the realms of worship necessary for true "spirit and truth" worship. Consequently this special "levitical anointing" is being earnestly sought by many involved in worship leading. At this point I would like to post a sign for everyone in the church to read, saying "STOP, DO NOT GO BACK THERE!" There is a danger here of believers submitting once again to a yoke of bondage (Gal. 5:1).

While I agree there are definitely those who carry an anointing to lead the Lord's people in corporate worship, this anointing pours forth from the combination of a broken, contrite, worshiping heart and the gift of leadership (Romans 12:8), and has nothing to do with the restoration of a "levitical priesthood." And while it is true that the style of worship instituted in David's Jerusalem tabernacle allowed for more freedom and diversity than the traditional worship taking place simultaneously in Moses' Tabernacle, both were still only shadows of what was to come under the New Covenant (Heb.8:5; 10:1). For all David's depth of relationship with the Lord, he still did not have access to the knowledge of Christ through the indwelling Spirit that we, as New Covenant believers, are graced with (1 Peter 1:10-12).

If the tabernacle David established in Jerusalem truly was an Old Covenant manifestation of the "spirit and truth" worship to come under the New Covenant, such worship will be restored under the law of the Spirit of Life, and not by a return to hierarchical Old Covenant structure (Romans 8:2). Any attempt by today's church to RECREATE an Old Covenant pattern of worship is error. Yet, that is just what we see happening in some parts of today's church. Man-made buildings are being set aside for twenty-four hour worship led by teams of "levitical" worship leaders. Plans are being announced for these centres to be established in major cities around the world. Some are even teaching that these centres must be established in every major city on earth before Jesus can return.

Spirit and Truth Worship

Furthermore, while many are seeking to move in the "Davidic" style of worship that was practised in David's tabernacle, the church is in danger of losing sight of the fact that Jesus did not teach "Davidic" worship, but "spirit and truth" worship. And while some would say they are one and the same, worship in spirit and truth is not confined to musical expression alone, or only to corporate gatherings. Rather, true worship expressed through prophetic song, dance and other creative means is the outcome of a worshipful lifestyle that encompasses every aspect of a believer's life. Those who are continually yielding every aspect of their time, finance, relationships and lifestyle to the Lordship of Christ are the true worshipers whose sincere devotion will flow out through every other means available to them. True worshipers are ministering priests who worship Christ in "spirit and truth" by allowing Him pre-eminence in all things.

Speaking to a Samaritan woman, traditionally classed as a Gentile by the Jews, Jesus said: "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:21-24

This woman had questioned Jesus about a fundamental difference in belief between the Jews and the Samaritans. The Jews believed God must be worshiped in the temple at Jerusalem, while the Samaritans believed God must be worshiped on their sacred mountain, Mt. Gerazim. In His reply, Jesus established two essential revelations concerning worship of the One True Living God:-

1) true worship is not to be associated either with buildings, cities or geographical locations;

2) true worship takes place in and through the interaction of the Spirit of God with the spirit of man.

Spirit and truth worship will not be released through re-establishing a specific set of external factors that existed under an obsolete Covenant. It is not about centres of worship, for God's people meet in the Spirit. Nor is it about a new class of worship-leader priests engaging in shifts in order to ensure God is being worshiped twenty four hours, seven days a week. The scriptures state that "from the rising of the sun, to its going down, the Lord's name is to be praised" (Ps. 113:3) Beloved church, the Holy Spirit knows well how to do all that He has been sent to do. It is His realm of authority to ensure that twenty four hour worship is taking place across the earth, not ours. And as surely as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, you can be sure that at all times the Holy Spirit, the supreme worship leader, has someone, somewhere on earth, praising and worshiping our God ! Why? Firstly, because it is written, and secondly, the Spirit wills it so. And the Spirit and the Word together are Spirit and Truth.

For believers to be calling themselves "levites" at all is misleading and erroneous. It is essential that as New Covenant believers we understand that none of us are of the Levitical priesthood. As already established, our priesthood is not a continuation of an old one. It is a totally NEW priesthood, of the tribe of the Lion of Judah and of the order of Melchizadek.

The Levitical system, even as practised in David's tabernacle, was hierarchical and exclusive. The priesthood in which believers serve is one in which ALL believers are priests, and ALL believers are worshipers. The moment the church starts setting apart a special class of "appointed levites" we begin to create celebrities. Look around at the current Christian worship scene and see if this is not true. While there are notable exceptions, in much of the church we have created a culture of "idol" worship leaders. Furthermore, large sections of the church are spending millions of dollars on every state of the art technical gadget imaginable to make our worship leaders sound and look like the perfect images we crave. This is not the Kingdom; this is the world! Since ancient times, the desire of the flesh has been for fleshly kings to rule us, so that we "might be like all the nations" (see 1 Samuel 8), but there is only one King and He has ordained a HOLY NATION of servant-king priests, anointed, appointed, and destined to reign!

Jesus told the Samaritan woman "the hour is coming, AND NOW IS, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth". According to His words, spirit and truth worship was already being restored, breaking through the old law-bound system, even as He spoke. Everywhere Jesus set His feet, the Kingdom broke through. Spirit and truth worship is essentially a Kingdom manifestation and a work of the Spirit, not the flesh. Though we will see the Kingdom breaking through in the earth increasingly as the King's return grows nearer, the Kingdom shall not be fully ESTABLISHED until Christ returns to physically manifest His reign on the earth (Matt. 25:34; 1 Cor. 15:24; 2 Tim. 4:1; Rev. 12:10)

Finally, let me close this first part of our study with this thought. The scriptures say "I will...rebuild the tabernacle of David....". Similarly, Jesus also said "I will build My church....." In the past we have not heeded Jesus words and we have attempted to build His church for Him according to the way WE thought it should look. We have said "WE will build His church." Let's not make the same mistake again by attempting to restore by means of our flesh something that can only be restored by the Spirit. God has said it is He who will restore the fallen tabernacle of David, yet some are attempting to restore it for Him using a pattern that is no longer relevant. Let's not exalt a hierarchical "celebrity" priest class; let's not return to form and shadow. Let's truly pursue spirit and truth worship together as a royal, anointed, holy priesthood. Each believer a worshipper, each believer a priest, ministering to the King and proclaiming His greatness in the power and authority of the Spirit and of the Truth.

Part Two of this study, "Kingship", will be posted in the near future.
